No Athlete Left Behind

By:  Juli Akal

Through out the years, the Roxana School District has consistently provided a first class education for its students.  Day in and day out, teachers and staff at every level, from kindergarten through high school, work to raise achievement, challenge students, and empower them to be future leaders.  It can certainly be said that in the Roxana School District, “no child is left behind.”

The time has come to take steps to ensure that in our district no athlete is left behind!  Roxana has a rich sports heritage that boasts titles and championships too numerous to list.  In order to continue our tradition of athletic excellence, updated facilities are a must.  The goal of this campaign is to provide our athletic programs with top-notch facilities that will not only enhance and improve performance, but instill school and community pride.

The cornerstone of the project will be the track.  The current track, built in the early 40’s, was a great source of pride for our school and community.  Before all-weather tracks became common place, our cinder track was known as one of the best.  In 2009, however, the track is an out-dated facility that is difficult to maintain and hinders our athletic programs.  Since most schools have moved to all-weather surfaces, cinder tracks are nearly obsolete, and the cinders needed to replenish the surface each year are becoming increasingly difficult to find.  Daily running on the hard surface of a cinder track causes unnecessary injury to our athletes, and use of the facility is dependent upon weather conditions.  This is not the type of facility that enhances our athletic program, and it is certainly no longer a source of pride for our school and community.

Currently, Roxana is the only school in the South Central Conference without an all-weather track.  While other schools’ athletic programs continue to grow and benefit from a track that can be used on a daily basis, our athletes are on the sidelines waiting for the puddles to dry. Please join us in our efforts to make sure that our athletic programs match the strength of our academic programs… that no athlete is left behind!

Buy A Brick?
By: Patrick Keeney

Would you like to have the name of your family, loved ones, or organization permanently attached to Roxana School District? Help be part of a fundraising project that will enable you to engrave a name and/or message on a 4” x 8” brick that will be set in our walkway to the new Roxana sports complex. There will be a number of ways to customize your paving brick with the name and/or message that will always be a part of this exciting project. These permanent tributes are a perfect living memorial that will directly benefit phase 1 of the new sports complex, completing a new track and entry walkway by August 2010. All of the money from the brick sales will go directly to the new track and also provide you with a tax deduction.

With a total need of $500,000; the engraved brick fundraiser will now provide you and your family with an opportunity to directly benefit the school, help build a new track, have a customized brick that will be permanently set in the new entrance.

The cost will begin at $50 for a standard 4” x 8” engraved brick with the option of buying a 12”x 12” for $500 or 16”x 16” granite blocks for $1,000. There will also be a limited number of custom marble or granite benches for $3000 available if interested.

For information about the Engraved Brick Fundraiser please contact Fonda Starbuck at 254-7541 or Kim Sheraka at 254-7543.

Vision The Roxana Sports Complex Committee would like to partner with community organizations, local businesses, local unions, alumni, parents, and students for the purpose of renovating and improving our athletic facilities.  Improvements will instill pride in the community, school, and athletes.  This project will have multiple phases of construction dependent upon the amount of funds available from contributions, grants, and the school district.   Phase 1 will focus on the track and new entrance to the football stadium.  Other phases will focus on the improvement of our trophy case area, gymnasiums, wrestling room, weight room, locker rooms, soccer field, softball, and baseball diamonds.

    Goals of Phase 1

·         Add an all weather track by the start of the 2010 school year

·         Construct a new restroom / concession / ticket booth entrance to the football stadium

·         Professional landscaping of a new park like entrance (including a brick walkway and gazebo)
