Welcome & Handbook

Welcome to the South Roxana Elementary School web site! Our school is one of two elementary schools in the Roxana Community Unit School District. South Roxana Elementary is an attendance center which numbers almost 500 students who are enrolled in Pre Kindergarten through Grade Five.

Our knowledgeable and dedicated staff provides an exemplary, developmentally appropriate education for each child with an emphasis on both academic and social growth. A strong academic foundation will continue to be built upon at each grade level. A child's "foundation" is not built by the school alone. At South Roxana Elementary School, we feel that a positive, cooperative relationship among parents, school personnel, and community members is the key to the success of a child. We welcome you and your children to our school.

We are a school that values accomplishment and effort. Our goal is to have home and school work together so each student achieves his or her highest potential. Once again, we welcome you and hope you enjoy your visit.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What time does school begin and end?
Although students are admitted to the building at 8:00 A.M. if they choose to eat breakfast, the bell for students to enter the school building and go to their classroom rings at 8:30 A.M. The bell for student dismissal rings at 3:00 P.M.

My child is absent today. What procedures should I follow to notify the school?
You may call the school office at 618-254-7591 any time prior to 8:30 A.M. Before 8:00 A.M. you may leave a message on the automated system. Please leave the child's name, the child's teacher, your name, your relationship to the child, the reason for absence, and a phone number where you may be reached. It is the responsibility of every parent to insure that their children attend school regularly. Many times, once a child arrives at school and become involved with the activities of the day, he or she will begin to feel better. Missing school may result in poor work habits, lower grades, lower self-esteem and a lack of self-discipline.

Something has occurred and my child needs to go home a different way. What should I do?
If time permits, please send a note with the child to the child's teacher if after-school arrangements have changed. If necessary, you may call the school to notify the child of any change. If you call, please give the child's name, the child's classroom teacher, your name, your relationship to the child and a number where you may be reached.

It is necessary for me to meet with my child's teacher. What procedures should I follow?
When it is necessary to meet with your child's teacher, please call the teacher at 618/254-7591 to schedule an appointment. Upon entering the building for your appointment, please stop by the office to sign in and receive a visitor's pass before proceeding to the classroom.

I wish to pick up my child early. What do I do?
Please avoid picking up your child early unless it is absolutely necessary. You will need to stop in the office to sign your child out. Please keep in mind that the time just before dismissal is when teachers are giving instructions and giving homework reminders.

What do I do about picking up homework if my child is absent?
When calling your child off from school, please notify the office personnel if you wish to pick up your child's homework at the end of the school day, 3:00 P.M. If you call before noon, your child's teacher will have time to prepare homework. Homework may be picked up in the office.

My child needs to take medication during the school day. What procedures do I follow to insure this will happen?
Before administering any medication to your child, the school must have a written order from a licensed health care provider. There are other regulations in place as well. Please see the rules pertaining to medication in the Elementary School Handbook for Parents and Students.
