Environmental Investigations at RCUSD #1
Air Quality Testing
During the summer of 2011 the District requested that air quality testing be performed at the High School. Although the school is not in the area impacted by the hydrocarbon contamination west of the Wood River Refinery’s North Property, Shell Oil Products agreed to do the testing. The environmental air sampling was performed by URS, a contractor for Shell, in and around four buildings in the Roxana High School complex. The Illinois Department of Public Health evaluated the data and concluded that there were no health hazards in those buildings.
However, due to the ongoing environmental investigation and additional ambient air sampling done by Phillips 66 throughout the summer and fall of 2012, the District, in conjunction with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), requested that Shell Oil conduct air sampling in each school in June 2012. The District retained an independent air quality specialist (Aires Consulting Group Inc.) to submit a proposal for the testing and to evaluate the results.
"All air sampling data inside the three school buildings indicated that individual chemical compounds are not present above recommended exposure levels. Combined volatile organic compound (VOC) levels are not indicating any unusual sources and meet all standards and recommendations for acceptable indoor air quality."
