Welcome to Second Grade!
Second grade furthers the hard work students did in first grade. In math, we expand students’ knowledge of numbers up to 1,000 and begin to understand addition and subtraction beyond basic facts. Students will be expected to become fluent with their basic facts through 20 and we will practice a lot to accomplish this goal. We will also practice measurement using inches and centimeters, learn about and use money, and begin to read a clock up to the nearest 5 minutes.
Reading in second grade goes beyond phonics and fluency. Although we do focus on both of these, we will also begin to develop a deeper understanding of what is read and foster an enjoyment of reading in students. Reading in second grade should be fun and we will do a lot of it!
